Toxicity
Self promotion
Favoritism
Whispers
Entitlement
Absence
Reduced communication
Perceptions acted upon without evidence
These are just some of the ingredients in a toxic workplace. It makes one drag themselves to work grudgingly. It causes one flee at the end of the day. It feels hostile, unwelcoming, and just wrong.
Leaders who cannot lead create toxicity. They give permission to a few to wreck havoc by inaction or over zealous reaction. So often, the leader appears oblivious that a few are playing them. They participate in the game and even more turmoil bubbles up.

I just read your poem about 6 times....and in it I read my life story. I too believe that leaders do not create a toxic environment - yet they do allow it to happen! IN THE END....the good guys win....but there are many years when they self promoting toxic individuals control the world/
ReplyDeleteThe words fractured and divisive also bubble up here as well Wanda. In a leadership vacuum the elements you mentioned develop like algal bloom. Leadership is a complex and demanding role and requires the ability to reflect not only on the performance of those around you, but your performance. In this world we can be either a maker or a breaker. Great leader empower those around them. Thank you for your brave and thought provoking piece.
